Think Bing—The Book!
Bing Copeland played a major role in helping surfing and the surfboard industry to become what they are today. At 13, he became fascinated while helping out at pioneer surfboard maker Dale Velzy’s workshop in Manhattan Beach. He spent the mid-’50s in the Coast Guard stationed in Hawaii and surfed the big waves of Oahu’s North Shore and Makaha. In 1958 he sailed across the Pacific and introduced modern surfboards to New Zealand. By 1960, back in Southern California, he was making surfboards commercially and his company became one of the longest-running and most progressive in the surfing world. This is the story of Bing Copeland, the business he built, the colorful cast of craftsmen he employed and the visionary surfboards they made and continue to make even now.

| Bing Copeland has handcrafted some of the worlds finest surfboards. The Bing name has become an icon in the modern surfing world. The Bing surfboard designs of the 1960's have been said to have been 10 years before their time. Prepare yourself for an enlightening journey through surfboard evolution. If you have a Bing surfboard and have always wondered about the history behind your board, just shoot us an email. Bing is one of the few 60's surfboard builders to keep a complete file of all the boards he produced and is more than happy to share them with us. Back in the early 80's I picked up a Bing at a local Oregon surf shop to learn to surf on. All I was told is that it was a vintage Bing, made in the early 60's. For years I surfed with it and wondered who Bing was. Then along came the internet and I started searching for information. I found very quickley that there was not a lot of info on this Bing fellow that now lives in Idaho. I cannot remember exactly how I first found Bing's email address, but I had it for over a year before I emailed him. I figured he did not want anything to do with those old boards. Well I was wrong, he was just a stoked as I was and has supplied me with all the info on my boards and helped create this website. Enjoy |

At 13 years old in 1949, Bing began learning to surf at the Manhattan Pier with Greg Noll. About 1951 Dale Velzy opened his surf shop at the pier and that became Bing's second home. He cut plan shape for him, sanded fiberglass, repaired boards and swept out the balsa shavings. Velzey literally tutored Bing through his early teens and taught him all the things his real father thought he really didn't need to know. Bing didn't know he wanted to be a surfboard shaper until 1958 when Bing and Rick Stoner built 6 or 8 boards for the Kiwi's when they introduced the Malibu surfboard to New Zealand. Bing was impressed how the shapes came out and realized that after all those years watching Velzy, he really did have a talent for surfboard shaping. When they returned to California, Rick and Bing went back to their L.A. County lifeguard jobs and started stripping the glass off of old balsa boards and reshaping them in Bings mother's garage. Right about that time (1959) Clark and Walker began to make foam blanks and that led to their opening of Bing & Rick Surfboards on the Strand in Hermosa Beach. After the first year, Bing bought Rick out as he wanted to continue his career with the lifeguards. |
